BMW Reveals Colour Changing Paint
BMW have show off a colour changing paint on a new iX Flow Concept car. “E Ink” is where bodies of panels are covered in segments of ePaper material and these change colour when charged with a small electrical current. This then reveals a pattern depending on the settings.
The surface is derived from eReader displays and consists of millions of microcapsules that are a similar width to a human hair.
The capsules contain negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black ones; an electrical field causes the desired pigment to collect at the surface of the capsules, which changes the colour of the car.
BMW have stated they are even able to fix the coating where marks and scratches have occured.
